MGIS49-12 is a ring main unit for the secondary distribution network. MGIS49-12 can be supplied in 10 different configurations suitable for most switching applications in 12/24 kV distribution networks.

It is extendable and combined with the SafePlus concept, which is ABB’s flexible, modular compact switchgear, they represent a complete solution for 12/24 kV secondary distribution networks. MGIS49-12 and SafePlus have identical user interfaces.

MGIS49-12 is a completely sealed system with a stainless steel tank containing all live parts and switching functions. A sealed steel tank with constant atmospheric conditions ensures a high level of reliability as well as personnel safety and a virtually maintenance-free system.

This product is in conformity with the standards of IEC62271-200, IEC62271-100, GB3804-2004, GB3906-1991, GB16926-1997, GB/T11022-1999.

Normal operating conditions:

  1. Air temperature: ±40°C; Daily average ≤25°C
  2. Altitude above sea level: Maximum installation altitude: 4000m
  3. Wind: less than 35m/s;
  4. Earthquake intensity: no more than 8 degrees;

The MGIS49-12 concept offers a choice of either switch-fuse combination or circuit-breaker with relay for protection of the transformer. MGIS49-12 can be supplied with an integrated remote control and monitoring unit.

Operating Principle of MGIS49-12 RMU:

The core operational principle of a MGIS49-12 (RMU) lies in its ability to form a closed-loop configuration with the power supply network. This design enables the power to be supplied to the looped network and subsequently distributed to various branches directly from the main trunk line through high-voltage switches. This arrangement offers a distinct advantage: each branch can independently draw power from either side of its connection point on the main loop.

This unique configuration allows for continuous power supply to each branch, even in the event of a failure on one side of the main line. Should the left side experience a failure, the branch can seamlessly draw power from the right side, and vice versa. Despite being fed by a single-circuit power source, this setup mimics the benefits of a dual-feed system, significantly enhancing the reliability and stability of the power distribution network.

In essence, Ring Main Units facilitate a highly resilient power supply system, ensuring that each distribution point remains powered under various conditions, thereby improving the overall reliability of the electrical distribution infrastructure
